PEN Football Gaining Valuable Experience
• Peninsula football continues to battle through its nonconference schedule before taking on the tough Bay League.
Panther football is back and ready to take a big leap for the 2018 season.
After a disappointing 4-6 season, the Peninsula High Panthers look to compete for a Bay League title this season. Peninsula enters its third year under head coach David Young who has put an emphasis on effort this season on and off the field.
The Panthers have senior quarterback Ethan Gretzinger back this season along with senior running back Ethan Han.
The offensive line is returning all five starters, including left tackle Zack Denney who has been starting on the varsity since his sophomore year and already has Division 1 college offers.
The Panthers are 1-2 thus far with a big win over Oak Park High School and two tough losses, to El Segundo and Culver City. The Panthers offense has been a strength so far in the first three games, averaging 30 points a game. The defense has shown big-play ability with two interceptions against Culver City.
The Panthers hope to put it all together Friday, Sept. 6, at home against Torrance. Torrance beat the Panthers last season, 21-20, at Torrance High School.
The Panthers play North Torrance the following week and then get a bye before Bay League action starts.
Big matchups in league include games against Redondo Union, Mira Costa and crosstown rival Palos Verdes. The Sea Kings beat Peninsula last year, but the Panthers are aiming to take down Palos Verdes on their home turf.
The Panthers are a young team looking to make a deep run in the playoffs and a shot at a Bay League title.
