PVNCL Takes The Lead In Local Service
• National Charity League, Palos Verdes Chapter, demonstrates creativity and positivity during the pandemic.
Patrons and Ticktockers connected hearts, hands and minds to achieve more than 15,100 service hours since June 2020 for a record-breaking year.
Palos Verdes National Charity League (PVNCL) is committed to bringing positivity and support to its members, community and philanthropies. With a year unlike any other, the Charity League has found ways to come together and make an extraordinary difference.
Since March 2020, the League has worked with philanthropies to create and deliver on countless Covid-safe volunteer opportunities, including, but not limited to the following:
• Providing sack lunches, participating in virtual tutoring sessions, baking and decorating pies, and delivering holiday gifts to Toberman Neighborhood Center.
• Class of 2024 decorating themed booths at Richstone Family Center’s Halloween drive-thru event to help create a safe and exciting experience for the community. The event was featured on the local news.
• Donating more than 500 Thanksgiving meal bags and 300 Weekend Wellness bags to the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles.
• Class of 2021 creating over 300 Healthcare Hero snack bags for healthcare workers at Torrance Memorial Medical Center (TMMC) and Belmont Assisted Living.
• Writing letters of inspiration to Special Olympics athletes and letters of gratitude to first responders at the Torrance Medical Center and UCLA-Harbor Hospital.
• Introducing and supporting The Kindness Rocks Project at Promenade on the Peninsula and TMMC, with plans to roll out to local schools.
• Sewing masks, baking treats, and much more.
During the summer of 2020, the PV Charity League held two philanthropy drive-thru events at Promenade on the Peninsula. More than 100 mother and daughter teams safely dropped off at-home philanthropy projects and donations for more than 10 organizations, both local and national.
In October 2020, PVNCL connected in a safe and socially distant way to recognize our Provisional Class of 2026, celebrate our Chapter Award recipients, and enjoy a feature presentation of Grease. Because, even in these uncertain times, “We Go Together!”
50’s style dress-up was encouraged and attendees were provided with boxed meals from Big Island Eats and fun favors such as fuzzy dice, packaged movie theatre popcorn, theatre box candy, and vintage sodas. PVNCL members also donated handmade, reusable T-shirt bags filled with non-perishable and canned foods to stock the pantry at Rainbow Services, a local organization providing help and hope to anyone impacted by domestic violence.
For the Palos Verdes Chapter Tea in April, the parking lot of Promenade on the Peninsula was transformed into gorgeous Par-Tea Pickup Stations decorated with a beautiful mix of fabrics, flowers, and teacups.
Each mother/daughter pair was provided a designated time to arrive and receive boxed tea meals provided by Lisa’s Bon Appetit, custom-made cookies created by Kelley Hart Creations, and a gift bag filled with all of the tea essentials including a glass teapot, blooming tea ball, glass teacups with NCL logo made by EmbroidMe, gold leaf teaspoons, and more. Mothers collected fresh floral bouquets prepared at an on-site floral station, as well as a handwritten notecard from their daughters.
Lastly, our mother/daughter pairs had an opportunity to take photos in two different settings with professional photographer Gilbert Yu.
Mothers and daughters later enjoyed their gift bag of goodies at home with printed conversation starters titled, “Spill the Tea.”
Over the last year, PVNCL’s monthly Patroness meetings were conducted via Zoom with optional but well attended socials, such as member-led cooking and mixology demonstrations, heart-healthy yoga with The Greenhouse, table scaping with Table Envy and mini writing session with Lorrie Tom plus more.
The Chapter also enjoyed local guest speakers including Dr. Kiss from Palos Verdes Medical Group, as well as Kim and Brynne Rhodes from the Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge.
Each month one to three Patronesses were presented with a Kindness Award along with a huge token of PVNCL thanks from Julie’s Balloons.
The Ticktockers made the most of their meetings too. For cultural events, the class of 2026 enjoyed a virtual presentation from Rabbi Yitzie Magalnic at Chabad Jewish Center, watched a documentary titled “The Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm,” and made matzo ball soup.
The class of 2023 created a self-guided car tour with detailed descriptions of architectural sites on the Peninsula. For online socials, Ticktockers enjoyed cooking and baking, playing Among Us, and participating in scavenger hunts together.
PVNCL would like to spotlight the following Ticktockers for making a difference with personal achievements and leadership projects during a difficult year:
Abbie Maemoto (class of 2021) published a book on Amazon titled, “What Is So Special About an Unspecialized Cell?: A Stem Cell’s Journey.” Sales of the book help BiomediGirls, an organization founded by Abbie, award scholarships for students in low-income communities to attend a stem cell research program.
Amanda Roberts (class of 2021) created her first feature film titled, “Beyond The Scale: A Story of Resiliency in Eating Disorder Recovery,” to help people understand what an eating disorder is and possibly help those who are struggling with their eating disorder.
Samantha Shao (class of 2022) is giving back to the medical centers that aided her mother during treatment and recovery by collecting comfort items to create uplifting tote bags for men and women undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the Hunt Cancer Center at Torrance
Memorial Medical Center. Caroline Berry (class of 2022) is collecting gently used books to support the library at Peace4Kids, an organization serving youth in foster care in South Los Angeles.
Together, PVNCL’s Patronesses and Ticktockers safely volunteered more than 15,000 service hours with our philanthropy partners since June 2020, with more than 8,500 of the hours volunteered together as mother and daughter.
The Palos Verdes Chapter’s proudest accomplishment was being selected by the Board of Directors at Toberman Neighborhood Center as the recipient of their 2021 Hope Award for going above and beyond in the past year.
