PEN Wrestling Grapples With New Season, Athletes

wrest.100 The Peninsula High wrestling program looking to build on past success.

The wrestling season at Peninsula High School is underway, and the Panthers are prepared to put in the effort to remain on top.
The season kicked off with the Orange Lutheran Tournament at Orange Lutheran High School on Dec. 6. The team prevailed in its matches, with Diego Sheng, Zach Denney and Steven Erickson taking first places. Daniel Ahn won second place, and Isaac Aguirre got third place.
The Panthers later competed in the Six-Way Tournament on its own court, where the team went 1-2 in matches.
Most recently, at the Irvine Tournament, Peninsula’s Sheng came in second place; Ahn won third place, and Aguirre and Muhannad Hassan came in fifth place.
The team has been committed to preparing for success, and have stepped up their workouts to reflect their competitiveness.
wre“Now that the season is [upon] us, we have been wrestling every day and have been increasing the intensity and seriousness of our workouts,” Jessica Ho said. “We’ve also just been working on technique and fundamentals as well.”
The team is aiming high and hoping to win a league championship and compete in CIF. Even though the team must adapt to the loss of several seniors, they feel like they have great team chemistry.
“We are a pretty small team, but we really stand out because we do some pretty gnarly damage for how many people we have,” Ahn said.
