Dr. Tyner New Leader At PV High
• Dr. Charles Park moves on after five years as principal at Palos Verdes High School – Dr. Allan Tyner takes over.
Each new school year often arrives with many changes and additions. At Palos Verdes High School, a new principal was welcomed to the Sea King family this semester. Allan Tyner is the new principal of PVHS.
Tyner has worked in the education field for 17 years, beginning with nine years as a social science teacher at Warren High School in Downey.
Aside from teaching, he was also a coach for football, baseball and golf teams, and was heavily involved in other extracurricular activities. He was the Associated Student Body class adviser, Link Crew coordinator, PLC lead, Teacher Technology lead and PTSA teacher representative.
After 17 years of teaching, he felt the need to pursue a Master’s degree in Educational Administration, which he obtained from Concordia University in Irvine. This gradually helped him to become vice principal at Warren for two years and then assistant principal at Downey.
As Vice Principal, Tyner oversaw discipline, attendance and technology. As an Assistant Principal, he was in charge of athletics, ASB, special education, budget, AVID, leadership team and the AP/Honors program.
He received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at USC. With his degrees in hand and his vast amount of experience, he felt prepared to advance to the next step and decided to apply for the position of principal at PVHS.
“Getting into classrooms and seeing the great things that are happening at PVHS is my favorite part of being principal,” Tyner said. “I also enjoy interacting with staff, students and parents. It is informative to understand each of their perspectives on PVHS.”
According to Principal Tyner, the biggest difference between the schools he has worked at and PVHS is the size. There are about 3,700 students at Warren High, while at Downey there are around 4,000 students. PVHS has only around 1,700 students. This results in a closer relationship between student, teacher and administration, he said.
“Principal Tyner should know we are a very spirited school, and we all look out for each other,” senior Jack Engstrom said. “I am looking forward to having a great senior year [both] athletically and academically, and leading Red Tide with a new principal.”
Principal Tyner has made plans for the new year and years to come. He strives to unite the school and help everyone come together as a family.
“My number one goal this year is to build relationships with our staff and students, so I understand the challenges we are facing at PVHS,” the principal said.
“Currently, 86 percent of our students’ complete A-G requirements making them eligible for a four-year college after graduation, and 75 percent are attending a four-year school straight out of high school. Our students are obviously high performing, and I want to continue to improve on the tradition of excellence at PVHS,” he said.
He is excited to be working with so many excellent instructors and students and is thankful for the opportunity to be principal at PVHS.
“PV has been great,” Principal Tyner said. “Everyone has been very nice and welcoming. I have only been here for a short time but it is evident that our staff cares for students and wants them to succeed.
“[PVPUSD] is a great district in a great area. PVHS has incorporated programs in academics, the arts and athletics that challenge and engage students. Parents have a high rate of involvement which ensures that our students are focused on their education. It is an awesome place to work!”
